Title: On the Flow of Thing in Ge Liang Novels

Abstract: With the deepening of the discussion on thing in the field of philosophy, the ontological status of thing is attracting increasing attention. This has promoted the study of thing in Ge Liang’s fiction from being behind the scenes to the forefront, presenting the characteristic of a notable “fluidity”. Specifically, this fluidity is embodied in the extension of time, the movement of the regions, and the reconstruction of meaning. By tracing the circulation of thing among subjects, Ge constructs a micro-history with thing as the bond, where the superposition, interweaving, and conflict of individual memories attached to thing give prominence to the richness and complexity of social history. Furthermore, his depiction of the cross-regional flow of thing, through its collision, toleration, and adaptation within different regional cultural contexts, serves as a metaphor for the blending and negotiation of individual cultural identities. Through the three pathways of similarity, creation, and possession, fluid thing becomes a material extension of human beings, endowed with the initiative to construct subjects and promote narratives. In modern society as Zygmunt Bauman reveals, which is filled with uncertainty, ignorance, and powerlessness, the thing in Ge Liang's works not only reflects the changes of the times through its fluidity, but also provides a sense of stability and rational reference for anxious and restless modern people through its persistence and initiative.
